Welcome to our summer Newsletter. Although the calendar still says "August" we can feel our summer coming to a close. School is beginning for many, and that's a reminder of fall. Many stores are displaying Halloween decorations, and we know that Christmas displays cannot be far behind. These are exciting times for many, but we also must remember to be mindful. In our culture that's often a challenge: to stay present, to be in the now, and to appreciate each moment, instead of worrying about the future -- which we cannot always control. Yet, it's always in our best interest, and the best interest of our health, to remember to stay present. Fall officially begins on the September 23rd, so ENJOY the rest of your summer!
Warmly, Karen Simonton, Executive Director

New Health and Healing Resources from EmbodiWorks!
A new educational website, EmbodiWorks, is now offering important integrative cancer care resources we believe you will find of interest. Co-founded and directed by Jeannine Walston, (right) EmbodiWorks addresses whole person health in five specific areas: body, mind, spirit, and social and environmental concerns. EmbodiWorks provides important perspectives about how these aspects of health and life interact and influence one another in people affected by cancer. Educational information on their site explains that no true separation exists and only a web of networks create the whole person. This includes mind-body support and wellness strategies, including Dr. Simonton's work. Their Resources section helps cancer patients and caregivers navigate their cancer journey. Included is how to create your own integrative cancer care program, questions for evaluating cancer treatments and providers, help in evaluating cancer research and treatments, integrative providers and clinics, retreats, books, financial assistance, and other reliable resources, empowering people through and beyond cancer. Articles will inform cancer care providers as well, many practitioners serving as authors. Scientific references are incorporated throughout their site. Use the link below to learn more about EmbodiWork's educational resources for reducing cancer risk, improving cancer-related survival, and increasing quality of life.

Many Helped by Terri Koller Kaplan Memorial Fund
Thanks to the generosity of Mr. Ross Koller in creating the memorial fund on behalf of his mother, Terri, 42 participants have been financially assisted over the past 12 months. Also, many others have given generously to this scholarship fund to help those whom they love in times of financial need. Through the Terri Koller Kaplan Memorial Fund, nearly $30,000 has been raised to allow patients to participate in the retreat program over the last year. We wish to thank each of you who have donated to help others. We also extend a very special thank you to Mr. Ross Koller for the creation of this fund and its ability to contribute to the health and emotional well-being of SCC participants. Your kindness toward others is deeply appreciated by Simonton Cancer Center.
SCC Participates in Italian Medical Conference
In June the Simonton Cancer Center participated in the XXIII Congresso Nazionale di Societa Italiana Medicina Psicosomatica (National Congress of Italian Society of Psychosomatic Medicine.) The theme for this year's event was "Prejudice and Therapy." The SCC team was led by Cornelia Kaspar, Director of the Simonton Cancer Center in Germany and Italy, and included Dr. Luisa Merati, Dr. Tiziana Mazzotta, and Dr. Marzia Zunarelli. They were given 90 minutes to introduce the Simonton Method to members of the Congress. Luisa Merati began the presentation with information on the influence of joy and distress on the human immune system, from the perspective of psychoneuro-immunology. Next Cornelia Kaspar presented the fundamentals of the Simonton Method, and then led an audience participation exercise, along with Tiziana Mazzotta, on how to transform unhealthy beliefs into healthy ones. Dr. Luisa Merati concluded the presentation with a meditation on Inner Wisdom from Carl Simonton's book, The Healing Journey. Congratulations to our European colleagues for a job well done!
