Greetings! Fall is our favorite time of year here at the Simonton Cancer Center--the color of the leaves, the brisk fall air--all of it a reminder that change is constant, sometimes subtle, and often dramatic. The Simonton Cancer Center has made many changes in the past year and we feel stronger and more excited than ever to share our news and new outlook with you. Most importantly, we wish to convey our commitment to help you in your journey toward improved health. As Thanksgiving approaches, this is a time to reflect and be grateful. We at the Simonton Cancer Center are very grateful, particularly to all our participants, past and present, who show up with an open heart, ready to learn--and in doing so, teach us. May your hearts and homes be filled with warmth this season. Happy Thanksgiving!
Karen Simonton, Executive Director

Rahla and Richard and "The Neuroscience of Fun"

Simonton Cancer Center staff members, Rahla Kahn and Richard Rossner, recently presented a seminar for the Pierce College Encore Program entitled, "The Neuroscience of Fun." Over two hundred students attended this lively event at the campus Performing Arts Theater. Rahla and Richard also gave a nod to the Simonton program with information, humor, and experiential insights. They highlighted the importance of choosing more of the things which bring joy and deep fulfillment in life, while letting go of the stressors that cause pain and suffering. The students laughed while learning that fun actually engages our inner pharmacy; it creates a powerful biochemical cocktail which not only makes us feel good, but strengthens our immune system as well. You can learn more about the work of Rahla Kahn and Richard Rossner at their website, www.ThePowerOfPlay.com.

Memorial Fund Established for Terri Koller Kaplan

The Simonton Cancer Center is pleased to announce the Terri Koller Kaplan Memorial Fund, made possible through a generous donation by her son, Ross Koller. This fund has been established to honor the life and memory of Terri Kaplan, mother, wife, clinical social worker and human rights activist. Terri possessed great strength and energy, dealing with her diagnosis of small cell lung cancer for six years. She always took an active role in her health and the health of others, exploring many avenues of healing and wellness. In January of 2004, Terri's journey lead her to the Simonton Cancer Center and the work of O. Carl Simonton, M.D. She became a strong supporter of the work here at SCC and a good friend. Frequently, Terri would sponsor other patients who were financially unable to attend SCC programs. It is in this same spirit of compassion and generosity that Terri's son, Ross Koller, has established the Memorial Fund in honor of his mother. We wish to extend our gratitude to Ross, for this fund and all the benefits so many have and will receive.
